Athens Video> Production > Editing

About editing.

Editing can include:
  • capturing short video clips
  • digital manipulation of video
  • image preparation
  • graphic creations
  • creating titles
  • audio correction
  • DVD menu creation
  • or any other task that requires sitting at the editing station
Editing does not include:
  • the exporting of final video product
  • archiving of project
  • simple DVD menu creation
  • capturing of long video clips while customer is not present
  • uploading videos to website for client preview
Editing is an open ended process that is often hard to bill for because of various factors, some of which can be:
  • the cognitive thinking process
  • interruptions during actual editing
  • slow computer times, and computer crashes
  • ineffective editing due to lack of direction from client
  • administrative work preparing for editing, like gathering raw materials
  • research
Work that often cannot be billed for are processes such as:
  • discussing the project with the client and going over the raw materials to be included
  • creating paperwork for the job and filling out timesheets
  • exporting and uploading videos for client preview and approval
  • discussing changes by phone or email
  • archiving all work after project is completed
  • research
It is for these reasons that we are moving to a flat rate editing schedule that uses a formula based on fairness to both the client and Athens Video. It is a formula based on years of experience in billing for video production and editing time. It eliminates time wasted with phone calls, slow computers, bathrooms breaks, etc.

Editing Fees.

In studio Editing Sessions with Client present - $75 hr
This is the most effective and quickest way to edit - an editing session with the client providing real-time feedback. Editing decisions can be made immediately, and approvals made on the spot. Editing sessions are billed from the start to the end time with the client. If there is further editing to do after the client has left, an estimate of time will be given, and strictly held to. The client will not be billed for processes listed in the "Editing does not include" section to the left.

Editing without Client present.
For most video projects, we have an editing rate we've created based on years of editing experience. It eliminates open ended editing times and allows the client to know fairly accurately what the final charges will be. It takes into account several factors such as:
  • length of final video
  • type of video (marketing, creative, documentary, ceremony, etc)
  • amount and variety of elements to add (titles, graphics, photos, music, interviews, animations, etc)
  • compositing processes such as color correction, special effects, green screen, etc.

Sample rates:
One camera event videography such as speakers, graduation ceremonies, performances, etc (if you are not getting a One Camera Performance Package) will be charged one hour of editing for each hour of video. For example, if we film a presentation that lasts one hour, there will be one hour of editing that includes audio correction, color correction, removal of unwanted video before or after presentation, opening title if needed, and other processes to make it presentable. You may also opt to have no editing charges and just have a DVD of the raw footage.

Informational Videos or other videos that have several layers of elements such as interviews that need to be edited down, photos, music, sound effects, etc will be charged (in addition to any of the original filming charges) may be charged up to 3 hours of editing for each finished minute. This means that a 5 minute video will be charged for 15 hours of editing since each minute will take approximately 3 hours to edit.

Each video project is unique, so please call to ask us how your video will be charged.
